Spartan Shorts: Saturday’s meet ends a nearly two-week competition break for Coach Mike Kroll’s squads. In their most recent appearance at Ohio Wesleyan University’s Corbiere-Merion Invitational Nov. 18 and 19, the record board at the Black and Gold’s home Strauss-Peabody Aquatic and Fitness Center continued to reshuffle. For the women’s program, senior standout Emily Clark (Peru, Ind.) helped re-set five new records and was in the top five of each of her events, while the freshman duo of Shelby Kell (Charlottesville, Ind.)and Katie Blystone (Carmel, Ind.) were part of setting three new event standards. On the men’s side, junior diver Anjel Clemente (Rensselaer, Ind.) won the one and three-meter disciplines, setting a new school record in the three-meter, while fellow Class of 2019 member Guerby Ruuska, also a Rensselaer native, toppled a previous program record in the 50-yard backstroke … Going into the fall season finale, the 2017-18 team has set a combined 17 new school records (13 women’s, four men’s) over four competitions … This weekend is the final large-scale meet for the Spartans until the first edition of the newly-formed Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships in early February. Manchester University’s January slate consists of road duals at Ohio Athletic Conference foe Wilmington College Jan. 13 and NCAA Division II Urbana University of Ohio Jan. 27 along with a tri-meet against fellow HCAC member Anderson University and Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association institution Olivet College at AU sandwiched in-between on Jan. 20.
