Spartan Shorts: Coach Josh Dzurick’s crew kept things close throughout in their 2017-18 HCAC opener Dec. 2 before a late run propelled host Mt. St. Joseph University to a 75-62 decision. Sophomore guard Haley Farris (Fort Wayne, Ind.) dropped in a single-game personal collegiate-best 19 points, guiding three Manchester University players in double figures. However, her effort, which included five steals, a pair of assists and nine rebounds, wasn’t enough to overcome an MSJ group that tallied 50 second-half points due to hitting better than 57 percent in the third period and at a stratospheric 75 percent pace in the final stanza.  The Spartans led by as much as eight during the afternoon inside MSJ’s Harrington Center before the Lions’ final 20-minute blitzkrieg. Junior forward Beth Schaefer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and freshman guard Mikalia Taylor (Connersville, Ind.) added their names to the Black and Gold’s top scorers’ list. Schaefer finished with 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Taylor finished with 11 to go along with a blocked shot, a steal, three assists and two rebounds … Despite the rough season beginning, MU has strong rankings on the current HCAC statistics report. Sophomore guard Nicole Weaver (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Schaefer are seven-eight in scoring average (12.4 and 12.2 ppg, respectively); Farris and Schaefer are each in the rebounding top 10 (Schaefer – 7.4 pg – No. 5/Farris – 6.4 pg – No. 7); Schaefer’s 51.1 field goal conversion rate is ninth-highest; and Weaver’s assist average of nearly three (2.8) per game sits ninth … The Spartans return home Saturday, Dec. 9, to take on Earlham College in a conference doubleheader with the men’s team that features 2 and 4 p.m. game times. Manchester University begins four in a row on the road Saturday, Dec. 16, with a trip to Rose-Hulman for another 2 and 4 p.m. doubleheader.
