The Wabash Apaches traveled to Huntington Saturday to take on the Vikings for their last game before Christmas. Wabash would lead early and hang with the Vikings for most of the game before falling 56-44.
Huntington would grab a 3-0 lead to start the game on a Zach Daugherty three point play before Austin Vinopal scored off an offensive rebound to make it 3-2. Sawyer Stoltz would then make it 5-2 before the Apaches scored 7 straight. Trenton Daughtry would hit a three to tie the game and was followed by a Logan Vander Velden rebound basket before another Daughtry bucket to give Wabash a 9-5 lead. With the Apaches leading 11-7 Daugherty would hit a three, followed by two straight buckets from Hank Pulver, the last being a runner at the buzzer to give the Vikings a 14-11 lead after one.
Huntington would stretch their lead to start the second when Pulver hit, followed by Daugherty and Stoltz to put the Vikings up 20-11. Dereck Vogle would then hit a three for Wabash, followed by a Elijah Vander Velden bucket to make it 20-16 before the Vikings would run again. Two straight Pulver buckets, followed by a Mitchell Geller bucket made it 26-16 when Wabash finished the quarter with 6 straight. Luke Mattern would hit two free throws, followed by two from Jared Holley and a bucket from Daughtry to make it 26-22 at the half.
A Daughtry free throw and a Mattern bucket for the Apaches closed the gap to 26-25 to start the third quarter before a Stoltz bucket and a Mattern three made it 28-28. The Vikings would then find another run when Geller hit twice with the second being a three point play, followed by a Daugherty bucket to make it 35-28. The Vikings led 37-31 before a Elijah Vander Velden bucket made it 37-33. Huntington would score the last three points of the quarter on free throws and led 40-33 with a quarter to go.
Joe Stoffel would get the Vikings off to a good start in the fourth, scoring the first two buckets, followed by a Geller bucket to open a 46-33 lead before Mattern hit from long range to make it 46-36. At 48-36 Mattern would hit a three and a two, cutting the Vikings lead to 48-41 before free throws from Trey Williams and Stoffel made it 52-41. Mattern would then hit his fourth three of the half to make it 52-44 before the Vikings closed the door with 4 free throws for the 56-44 final.
