The Southwood Lady Knights traveled to South Whitley Saturday evening to take on the Whitko Lady Cats. It would be a very entertaining night of basketball. The Junior Varsity contest would be a back and forth battle the whole night that was decided on a buzzer beater made by Ariel Benner.
The Varsity LadyKnights would start the main event of the evening on a quick 6-0 run in under a minute of play with 3 quick layups from steals in the backcourt. The Cats would settle down and the remainder of the contest would be neck-and-neck. Southwood led 18-12 after the first period, 27-23 at halftime, and 40-37 with a period to go. Although the Knights played valiantly the entire evening, the overall outcome of the game, especially in the final period would come down to free throws. The Knights struggled from the charity stripe going 11-31 for the game, including 2-9 in the fourth period. These struggles from the line ultimately allowed Whitko to send the game to overtime. The Knights again struggled in the overtime session going 3-10 in the extra time. Conversely, Whitko had their best free throw performance on the season going 23-35 from the line.
Coach West quote. “We’re both disappointed and pleased after tonight’s performance. We had 8 girls contribute to the scoring column again tonight. Even with our woes from the free throw line and not making a single 3-pointer, we were still able to score our second highest amount of points on the season, topped only by our last game Thursday. This just proves that we are continuing to operate better and better offensively, which has been our struggle all season. This was also our first truly close game for the entire 32 minutes. This game will help us moving forward, especially come Sectional Week. The disappointment of losing a game we felt we should have won will motivate us to continue working each day to get better.”
