Lady Squires Dominant in Route to Tenth Victory of Season

Story By Kody Smith-The Manchester High School Lady Squires improved to 10-9 overall on the season in impressive fashion, defeating the Blackhawk Christian Lady Braves 48-20 in a non-conference matchup. From start-to-finish, the Squires did not hold back as they cruised to the 28-point victory.

The first quarter started slow as both teams could not seem to put points on the board.Junior Kennedy Fierstos broke the dry spell with the first two points of the contest, which were then followed by fellow junior Emma West, who drilled a three from the wing to quickly extend the Squire lead 5-0 at the 5:00 point. Kerrigan Hatfield hit a three of her own to give the Squires
the advantage, 8-2 with 2:30 remaining on the clock. Manchester had the three-ball working as Kennedy Fierstos would hit two consecutive three-point jumpers, including one at the buzzer to end the first quarter 14-4. Fierstos finished the quarter with eight points, as the Squires went 4- for-5 from downtown in the first.
The offensive onslaught continued for Manchester, as senior forward Erika Kendall would clean up a Fierstos miss with an offensive board and put-back for two, which was then followed by a pair of free throws by sophomore Kiera Hatfield, extending the lead to 18-4. The Squires would force the hand of Braves head coach Jamie Perlich following a wide-open layup by Fierstos, extending the Squire lead to 21-6 with 4:50 remaining in the half. The Braves would only muster two points in the quarter, as the first half would conclude with a 22-point advantage in favor of Manchester, 28-6.

The Braves would show a sign of life during quarter number three, outscoring Manchester for the first and only quarter of the game, 12-9. Mackenzie Day would make a beautiful pass on a backdoor cut for a layup and two points by Erika Kendall with 5:30 remaining in the third. Kendall would score 6 points in the contest. Freshman Eva Bazzoni proved why she deserves Varsity playing time tonight, driving baseline and drawing loads of contact, hitting a shot in route to a three-point play after nailing her free throw. 33-12 Squires with a few ticks under 3:00 remaining in the quarter. A scary moment for Manchester arose as #15 Kiera Hatfield heads to the bench late in the quarter with an apparent lower left leg injury. She would not return to the game. West subbed back into the game for Hatfield. Another Fierstos steal and fast break bucket would send the score to 35-12 with under 2:00 remaining in quarter. Fierstos finished the night with 16 points to lead all scorers. The third quarter would end 37-18, with the Squires still well on top of the contest.
The fourth quarter resulted in only six points for Blackhawk Christian, which resulted in a plethora of bench players to find playing time for the Squires. Senior Kiera Stacy made the most of the opportunity she was offered, scoring four points in the final quarter of play. Sophomore Kennidy Lauer wanted in on the scoring parade as well, drilling a free throw with 25 seconds left in the ball game. The Squires win at home 48-20, and are now over .500 on the season as they currently sit at 10-9 on the 2017-2018 campaign.
