The Southwood Lady Knights would travel to Tippecanoe Valley Saturday night to take on the #7 team in 3A. Unfortunately, the Knights got off to a sluggish start and the Vikings pounced out to a quick 9-0 lead within 3 minutes. The Vikings pressure would force turnovers resulting in easy layups. Southwood would trail at the end of the first period 7-28.
The 2nd period was a much better period for the Knights as they played Valley much more even. The Knights were able to get some steals and rebounded much better against the taller Vikings. After a 3 point basket from Keagan Simpson and 4 free throws from Erin Lehner and Morgan Farr, the Knights had cut the lead down to 14 points. Valley would close the half with a few buckets to return the lead over 20. Valley would solidify their victory with multiple shooters making 3-pointers to pull away in the 3rd period and coasted to the 62-30 final.
Coach West quote “This is the 6th ranked opponent we’ve faced this year. In each game we have fallen well behind in the first period. The difference tonight over our previous 5 attempts, we fought back in the 2nd quarter and actually created some obstacles for them offensively. Our communication and post defense the 2nd through 4th quarters was as good as it’s been all year. We forced several turnovers on a team that doesn’t turn the ball over often. Valley’s coaches were very complimentary of our defense and total team effort for never giving in. We’re also excited about the more consistent contributions we are receiving from our bench. Sydney Helfin has been our 6th man all year and continues to provide the same tremendous energy she has all year, but is much more regularly contributing to the scoring here lately. Keagan Simpson stepped up tonight and led us in scoring with 8 points off the bench. This added depth will definitely help us in the tournament.”
