ANGOLA, IND. – Freshman Travis Murr (Franklin, Ind.) and junior Dasia Beck (Indianapolis, Ind.) added their names to Manchester University’s record annals Saturday, Jan. 20.
Murr, the 60-meter dash champion for a second successive weekend, wowed the crowd inside the Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic and Recreation Center. He clocked the fastest time among 48 competitors in the prelims (7.15) and then dropped eight-hundredths of a second off that in the finals (7.07) to edge senior teammate Harrison Hollis’ previous school mark (7.08). He needed every bit of the effort with Olivet College of Michigan’s John Adams neck and neck with him throughout to a runner-up mark (7.08), while Hollis took third (7.10).
While Beck’s 300-meter time of 45.04 seconds wasn’t an individual victory for Coach Brian Cashdollar’s team, it smashed the old mark of 47.04 set by former Black and Gold competitor Emma DeWitt a year ago. She wound up third in the race behind Thunder runners Jenna Gales (42.98) and Jensyn Garrow (44.34).
On the overall landscape, the Spartans’ men’s team produced 76 points to edge Adrian College of Michigan by two for second. MU’s women tallied 79 points for third and were led by sophomore Hannah Wappes (Columbia City, Ind.) who won the mile (5:10.85). Her time was right for third-fastest in program history and ranks first in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference by over 30 seconds. It also ensured her a second top 20 slot on the NCAA Division III list as converted to 5:07.81 due to track size, she stands No. 17.
MU returns to action Saturday, Feb. 3. They make the first of three visits to Anderson University’s Kardatzke Wellness Center, joining the fields of AU’s Raven Invitational.
