It was a TRC showdown Thursday night at Northfield as the Lady Norse played host to the Rochester Lady Zebras. Both teams came in at 7-1 in conference play, making the game a winner take all for the title. Fans at the game got more than their money’s worth as Kelcie Thomson hit a shot at the buzzer off her own missed free throw to send the game to overtime, where the Norse dominated in a 64-55 win to capture the TRC.
Northfield grabbed a 2-0 lead on a bucket from Ariel Dale before Rochester tied the score. Addi Baker would then give the Norse a 4-2 lead, followed by two Dale free throws to lead 6-2. The Norse would increase their lead to 9-4 on a Dale three before the Zebras answered with 5 straight to tie the score 9-9. Ally Keaffaber would then get the lead back for Northfield, followed by a free throw and a three from Kelcie Thomson to go up 15-9. Rochester ended the quarter hitting a three to make it 15-12 after one.
The Norse would start the second quarter on a 6-0 run, getting free throws from Keaffaber and buckets from Kyra Kennedy and Thomson to lead 21-12. Leading 23-15 after a Melanie Beery bucket the Norse would go cold and the Zebras would respond with a 15-2 run to end the quarter and grabbed a 30-25 halftime lead.
Again the Norse would get a good start to a quarter, getting a deuce and a three from dale, followed by a three from Keaffaber to put Northfield up 33-30 before Rochester scored 5 straight to lead 35-33. After a Beery free throw, Rochester would score the last 4 points of the quarter and led 39-34 after three.
The Zebras would get the first bucket of the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 41-34 when back came the Norse. Dale would hit a three, followed by a bucket from Baker and another three from Dale to put Northfield up 42-41. Rochester would score the next 4 points to lead 45-42 before a Kennedy bucket with 2:05 left made it 45-44. Both teams would then be plagued by fouls as the free throw line was the popular place to be with Rochester not missing and building a 51-46 lead before Baker hit with 15.6 on the clock to make it 51-48. The Norse would foul with 14.8 left with the Zebras making one for a 52-48 lead before Thomson drained a three with 7.6 left to make it 52-51. Again the Norse would foul, this time with 6.9 on the clock with Rochester making one free throw to lead 53-51. With Thomson racing down the floor Rochester would foul with 2.7 left, putting Thomson on the line. Thomson would miss the first before making an unbelievable play on the second. Thomson would miss the second with the ball bouncing right with Thomson racing from the free throw line to grab the rebound off her own shot, going up off balance a tossing up a one hand shot that hit nothing but net at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.
With momentum on their side the Norse would dominate the overtime. Baker would hit the first shot that was followed by a Thomson free throw and two from Keaffaber to make it 58-53. Keaffaber would then connect to increase the lead to 60-53. Rochester would miss their next shot before starting to foul. Dale would hit three straight free throws, followed by a Thomson free throw to cap off an 11-0 run before the Zebras hit the final bucket of the game.
With the win the Lady Norse captured the TRC with an 8-1 record.
