The Southwood Lady Knights opened sectional play at Clinton Central Tuesday, defeating Frontier 50-45.
Southwood grabbed a quick 3-0 lead when Makenna Pace hit a layup off a steal and Erin Lehner hit a free throw. Frontier made it 3-2 before another Lehner free throw. Tied 4-4 Keagan Simpson would drain a three with Frontier answering with a bucket to make it 7-6. Kayla Mays would make it 9-6 before a Pace offensive rebound bucket gave the Knights an 11-6 lead after one.
Lehner would open the second quarter with a bucket, followed by Pace to increase the lead to 15-6. Southwood led 19-11 when Frontier made a move, scoring 4 straight for a 19-15 score when Pace hit a free throw. Frontier would finish the scoring in the quarter with two free throws as the Knights led 20-17 at the half.
Morgan Farr sat out most of the first half in foul troube and made her presence known to start the third quarter. Farr would score the first 7 points of the quarter to give Southwood a 27-17 lead before once more Frontier would answer, scoring 6 straight to make it 27-23. Pace would stop the run with a three and was followed by two Lehner free throws and a bucket from Sydney Helfin to make it 34-23. The Knights led 36-27 with a quarter to go.
Frontier would cut the deficit to 36-30 early in the fourth before a Mays free throw. Frontier cut the Knights lead to 38-34 before Lehner stole the ball and hit Pace on a full court pass for a layup to make it 40-34. Leading 40-36 Mays and Pace made it 44-36 before Frontier came right back to make it 44-40. The Knights would need to convert from the free throw line down the stretch and did just that with Lehner hitting two free throws and Farr four to secure the 50-45 win.
