The Wabash Apaches got off to another rocky start Saturday, falling behind 12-0 in the first quarter before coming back to take the lead in the second. The Apaches however could not hold off Lewis Cass, falling to the Kings 54-48.
Lewis Cass would start the game on a 12-0 run before Dereck Vogel drained a three, followed by a Luke Mattern three to make it 12-6. Cass would than go up 15-6 before Trenton Daughtry hit the final bucket of the quarter with Wabash trailing 15-8 after one.
The Apaches would score the first 6 points of the second quarter. Austin Vinopal would hit a bucket and two free throws, followed by a Logan Vander Velden bucket to close the deficit to 15-14 before Cass scored 5 straight to make it 20-14. Back came the Apaches with Elijah Vander Velden hitting, followed by a Logan Vander Velden bucket off a steal. Jared Holley would then convert a three point play with Logan Vander Velden following with a bucket to complete a 9-0 run to grab a 23-20 lead. Up 25-22 after a Daughtry runner, Cass would score the last 6 points of the quarter to lead 28-25 at the half.
Cass would extend their lead to 30-25 to start the third quarter before a Logan Vander Velden bucket made it 30-27. Cass would respond with 6 straight to go up 36-27 before Logan Vander Velden closed the gap to 38-32. Down 40-32 Vogel would hit a three, followed by a Holley free throw for a 40-37 score. Wabash trailed 42-37 after three.
Neither team could find the bucket early in the fourth quarter until Cass scored at the 4:18 mark. On the play Vogel would take a shot to the head that would put him out of the game. During the stopped play Wabash would be assessed a technical foul with Cass hitting three free throws to take a 47-37 lead. Luke Mattern would stop the run with a bucket. With Cass leading 49-41 Daughtry would convert a three point play with 2:05 left t make it 49-44. The Apaches would continue heavy pressure, getting a free throw and a bucket from Holley as the Cass lead was dwindled to 49-47 with .56 left. Wabash would have to foul, with Cass hitting 5 free throws the last 34 seconds to secure the 54-48 score.
