Squires Dim Comets on Senior Night

It was a slow start for the Manchester Squires on senior night Friday before revving up the engines in the second quarter and going on to defeat Eastern 56-45.

It took almost three minutes for the first points to be put on the board before Brayden Casper hit two free throws at the 5:47 mark to give the Squires a 2-0 lead. The first Manchester bucket came with 3:33 left when Mason Hamby connected for a 4-0 lead. Eastern would get their first points from behind the arch with 3:06 on the clock to make it 4-3 before Casper ended the quarter with a bucket and the Squires leading 6-3.

Eastern would get the first bucket of the second quarter for a 6-5 score before the Squires started to warm up. Koehl Fluke would drain a three, then hit a deuce to increase the Manchester lead to 11-5 before a Weston Hamby three made it 14-7. The Comets would close the gap to 14-11 before a second Fluke three, followed by a Kam Lester bucket off a Weston Hamby steal to lead 19-11. Back came the Comets again, cutting the deficit to 19-15 before Casper ended the quarter with a long ball. Manchester led 22-15 at the half.

The Hamby brothers would trade buckets with Eastern to start the third quarter before two Fluke free throws made it 28-19. Leading 33-23 Eastern would hit two free throws for a 33-25 score before the Squires would get some breathing room. Fluke would hit, followed by a Weston Hamby three and a bucket from Lester to open a 40-25 lead before the Comets hit a three at the end of the quarter with Manchester leading 40-28 with a quarter to go.

A mason Hamby bucket and a Lester free throw would start the fourth quarter to make it 43-28 before the Comets scored 5 of the next 7 points for a 45-33 score. The Squires would respond with a bucket from Casper and a three from Weston Hamby to open a 50-35 lead. With 59 seconds left in the game the Eastern bench would be called for a technical foul with Mason Hamby hitting three free throws for a 53-38 score. Andrew McAtee would hit the final bucket for the Squires as Manchester went on to the 56-45 win.
