The Wildcats of Whitko visited Southwood on a beautiful spring Monday afternoon and eventually departed with a 3-2 tennis win. Field trips and illness forced the Knights to use a different line-up as inconsistent play and unforced errors hurt the Knights in this match.
With usual #1 singles player Drue Gentry on a field trip, Lorynn Hunt stepped up to play that spot. Inconsistent play and unforced errors plagued her in a 2-6,1-6 loss. Allison Steele moved up from #3 to #2 singles and picked up a confidence-building, hard-fought 3 set win by the scores 6-3, 6-7(7-9),6-3. With Lorynn and Allison moving up and JV #1 singles Makayla Murphy sick, Haleigh Snyder moved from #2 doubles to #3 singles. She got off to a slow start falling behind 0-3, but made a nice comeback to win the set 6-3. Unfortunately, she dropped the next two sets 1-6,4-6.
#1 doubles Emily Gwillim/Kyrstin Gouveia cruised through the first set 6-0 and held on to win set two 6-4. With the match now tied at 2 apiece , it came down to #2 doubles to determine a winner. Both teams committed numerous unforced errors as Courtney Andrick/Makenna Norman won set one in a tiebreaker 7-6(7-5). But the Knights could not overcome all the unforced errors and dropped the next two sets 5-7,3-6.
Southwood drops to 4-6(1-3) on the year and travels to Eastern Wednesday.
The Southwood JV won 3-1. Singles winners were Victoria Holloway and Kaitlin Hecker while Breklynne Swisher/Madison Snyder won a doubles match.
