Spartans have strong contingent tabbed all-HCAC

Sophomore women’s distance running standout Hannah Wappes (Columbia City, Ind.)topped a strong representation for Manchester University on the 2018 all-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference outdoor track and field teams, released Thursday, May 3.

Wappes, adding to a league awards cadre that includes indoor and outdoor Freshman of the Year (2017) and indoor track Athlete of the Year (2018) accolades, gained a fourth loop special award, claiming the track Athlete of the Year recognition due to sweeping the 800 and 1500 meters to lift the Black and Gold to a runner-up team finish at Rose-Hulman’s William Welch Track and Field Complex April 28. She was also one of a combined three first-team honorees for Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Brian Cashdollar’s men’s and women’s teams, joining senior discus conference champion Jacey Cauhorn (Kendallville, Ind.) and freshman men’s high jump victor Landon Balch (Rensselaer, Ind.). Cauhorn’s first team award was her third outdoor honor adding to two second-team spots.

Five Spartans picked up second-team notification. For the women, senior thrower Kara Breuckman (Crown Point, Ind.), junior sprinter Dasia Beck (Indianapolis, Ind.) and junior thrower Laina Boggs (Frankfort, Ind.) were recognized. The men’s second-teamers were sophomore jumps specialist Austin Roberts (Indianapolis, Ind.) and freshman hurdler Nathan Weaver (Goshen, Ind.). Beck and Breuckman earned their third and second second-team awards, respectively, while Roberts picked up his first and second overall all-HCAC merit adding to an honorable mention placement as a freshman.

Rounding out the Black and Gold’s top-notch list were junior men’s jumps specialist Justin Meredith (Shelbyville, Ind.) (men’s honorable mention); senior Matt Gasper (North Vernon, Ind.) (men’s Sportsmanship); and senior Paige Keller (Greenville, Ohio) (women’s Sportsmanship.).

MU is back on the track Friday, May 4, for the Indiana University Billy Hayes Invitational. Cashdollar’s meet roster features seven athletes including senior men’s sprinter Harrison Hollis (Lebanon, Ind.) (100/200 meter dashes) and sophomore women’s thrower Austin Jones (Lapel, Ind.) (hammer) along with Balch (high jump); Meredith (long/triple jumps); Breuckman (hammer); Cauhorn (discus); and Wappes (events to be determined). Going into the weekend, Balch is just outside the NCAA Division III performance list top 50 in the high jump with a season-best six feet, five and a half inches, while Cauhorn is 26th in the discus (139 feet, eight inches), Breuckman is 47th in the hammer (154 feet, 11 inches), and Wappes is only three spots out of the first 50 in the 800 (2:16.23) … MU resumes its national performance list bettering process Thursday and Friday, May 10 and 11, sending individuals to North Central College of Illinois’ Dr. Keeler Invitational in Naperville, Ill.
