Southwood Tennis Edges Rochester

The Lady Knight Netters visited Rochester HS on a gorgeous spring evening to battle the Zebras and came away with a big 3-2 TRC win.

The #1 doubles pair of Emily Gwillim/Haleigh Snyder raced out to a quick 6-2 win in set one, but found themselves down 3-2 in set two before rebounding for the 6-3 win to get the Knights on the board early. Lorynn Hunt dropped a straight set match at #2 singles to even the score at 1-1. Drue Gentry lost a close match 4-6, 4-6 at # 1 singles that easily could have been a win for Drue.

Now trailing 2-1, the Knights needed both #3 singles and #2 doubles to play well. And they did. At #2 doubles, Kyrstin Gouveia/Courtney Andrick played a very good first set in a 6-1 win. But they faltered in set two and went to the third set. Meanwhile, #3 singles player Allison Steele fought hard to win set one 7-5. Set two went back and forth the whole way with Allison eventually winning it in a tiebreaker 7-6(7-2).

Back at #2 doubles, Courtney held serve to open the set and the Knights led 2-1 early. The Knights were up 3-1 and then 5-3 but could not close out the set. Kyrstin had a big hold of serve at 5-5 to give the Knights the lead at 6-5 and put the pressure on the Zebra pair. Kyrstin had a beautiful down the line return winner and Courtney followed with an equally nice crosscourt return winner to give the Knights the game, set, match, and team win.

The Knights move to 6-9(2-4) on the season, and travel to Gas City to face a very good Mississinewa team Tuesday evening.

In JV action, Southwood won 4-2. Winners included Makayla Murphy(twice), Hannah Miller/Makenna Norman(8-2), and Baylee Swain/Victoria Holloway(8-3).
