BLOOMINGTON, IND. – Competing against a predominantly larger school field Friday, May 4, Manchester University garnered strong efforts at Indiana University’s Billy Hayes Invitational.
Sophomore women’s distance standout Hannah Wappes (Columbia City, Ind.), just a weekend removed from a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Year outing, responded with a school-record clocking in the 1500 meters on the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex track. The 4:38.46 mark, good for second in a 10-runner field, trailed only Division I Miami University of Ohio’s Gabrielle Hesslau (4:32.7) and set a new program standard by better than three seconds (former record – 4:41.3 – 1993). Her effort jumped her into the top 50 of the NCAA Division III performance list.
Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Brian Cashdollar’s women’s team added a second first ten finish. Senior thrower Jacey Cauhorn (Kendallville, Ind.) tossed the discus 124 feet, seven inches which was good for 10th.
MU’s men were led by a pair of field event marks from junior Justin Meredith (Shelbyville, Ind.) and freshman Landon Balch (Rensselaer, Ind.). Meredith hit the sand at 21 feet, five and a quarter inches for eighth place in the long jump, and Balch cleared six feet, one and a quarter inches in the high jump to wind up sixth.
The Spartans continue the 2018 campaign Thursday and Friday, May 10 and 11, sending individuals to North Central College of Naperville, Ill.’s Dr. Keeler Invitational.
