The Manchester and Northfield baseball teams combined for just 8 hits as the Squires edged the Norse 3-1 Monday.
With pitchers Grant Strobel and Nate Drancik dealing early the game went to the fourth scoreless before the Squires broke the ice. In the bottom of the inning with two outs Kaleb Fluke would single to right and was followed by a Hayes Sturtsman single to put runners on the corners. Jeremiah Airgood would then single home Fluke for a 1-0 lead.
The Squires would build on their lead in the fifth. Mason Roberts led off drawing a walk before Trey McNall and Kody Shepherd were hit by pitches to load the bases. Courtesy runner Nathan Self would then score on a passed ball to lead 2-0 before pinch runner Martindale did the same for a 3-0 lead. The Norse would work their way out of the jam, getting a fly out and throwing the tagging runner at home before a second fly out ended the threat.
Northfield would plate a run in the sixth. Clayton Tomlinson would lead off reaching on an error before a balk moved Tomlinson to second. A Chance Hartman ground out would move Tomlinson to third before a Blake Harner fly out scored Tomlinson to make it 3-1.
In the seventh Jared Vigar would lead off drawing a walk before Squires second baseman Brayden Lassiter back handed a grounder headed up the middle, flipping to Sturtsman for the force at second with Sturtsman firing a shot to first for the double play. Manchester pitcher Grant Strobel would the strike out the final batter for the 3-1 win.
