The Southwood baseball team had 4A, #3 Huntington North on the ropes Friday, getting a stand out pitching performance from Carson Rich, plus a home run. Rich was also vying for a walk off home run when Huntington center fielder Collin Landrum robbed Rich of his second dinger of the day and a walk off upset. Southwood fell 5-4.
The Knights would score the first run of the game in the second inning. Clayton Wells would hit a one out single and score on a Tristin Hayslett triple for a 1-0 lead.
In the third Mason Yentes would single before Rich hit a shot over the right field fence for a 3-0 lead. Huntington would get a run back in the fourth to make it 3-1, then score 3 more times in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth with two outs Wells would single and steal second. Hayslett would then come through again, hitting a single to left and scoring Wells to make it 4-4.
Huntington would score a run in the top of the seventh to set up the thrilling ending. With two outs Yentes would foul off four pitches before drawing a walk to bring Rich to the plate. On the second pitch Rich hit a shot to left center that was no doubt leaving the park when center fielder Collin Landrum made a leap and sports center catch to end the game 5-4.
