The Manchester and Southwood tennis teams advanced in the opening round of the Peru sectional Wednesday. Manchester defeated Peru 3-2 while Southwood knocked off county rival Northfield 4-1.
Manchester tennis advanced tonight with a 3-2 victory over rival Peru. With one unplayable court due to poor conditions, the 3 singles match wouldn’t start until the first available court opened after a match completed. And that win came for the Lady
Squires at two doubles as Lauren Metzger and Rebekah Pyle easily defeated Peru 6-3,6-1. After a sluggish start down 2-3, Manchester would win 9 straight games, 4 to take the first set and the others to open up a 5-0 lead. Next off was one singles player Kelsey Eichenauer as she dropped her first set but battled back to bring her second set to 3-4. After letting some game points escape for a 4-4 tie, she would then drop the set 3-6. The one doubles team of Kendra Auler and Ann Osborne (subbing in for injured Eva Bazzoni) struggled to win crucial points in a close 4-6,3-6 loss. Down 1-2, Manchester cheered on Halle Briner to a well played victory. Halle controlled the points and forced many errors by her opponent with smart play. Briners 6-2,6-1 bettered her week earlier Peru win by one game. Tied at 2-2, Lydia Little was just coming alive after a 1-2 start. Little would take a 5-2 lead before losing a game and then a 4-0 lead before failing to hold serve. Lydia’s 6-3,6-1 win clinched the team victory.
Southwood’s #1 doubles duo of Emily Gwillim/Kyrstin Gouveia got the first point for the Knights as they defeated Macie Sears/Katy Pefley 6-0,7-5. Drue Gentry got Southwood’s next point at #1 singles as she defeated Sidney Prater 6-3,6-1. Southwood’s match clinching point came from Allison Steele at #3 singles as she defeated Chloe Miller 6-2,6-4.
Even though the outcome was no longer in doubt, all players at #2 singles and #2 doubles kept battling. At #2 doubles, Southwood’s Haleigh Snyder/Courtney Andrick won a tight first set 7-5. Northfield’s Kelcie Thompson/Erin whetstone returned the favor 7-5 in set two. Northfield rode that momentum into set 3 to win it 6-2. At #2 singles, Northfield’s Indi Shear won a close first set 7-5 before Southwood’s Lorynn Hunt caught her second wind to cruise through set two 6-1. The third set was back and forth until Lorynn got a late service break and closed out the match with strong serving as she took set three 6-3.
Sectional play will resume Thursday. Manchester will take on Wabash while Southwood will match up against Maconaquah. Both matches are at 5:15
