The Southwood #1 Doubles Duo of Emily Gwillim/Kyrstin Gouveia played the #1 pair from Knox High School in the Individual Doubles Sectional at The Culver Academies Wednesday.
The first set was close all the way as both teams continued to hold serve until late in the set. Southwood led 5-4 and actually had a set point in the next game before Knox held serve to extend the set. Knox was able to break Southwood and then held serve for the 7-5 set win.
Knox was able to maintain the momentum into set two as thy held a one game lead at every changeover including the score of 5-4 with Emily to serve. As was typical all year, EG and KG were not ready to be finished. EG held serve to extend the set, and Southwood did to Knox as Knox did to them in set one as Southwood then broke Knox’s serve, and then held for the 7-5 set win.
EG and KG have played many 3 set matches this year, so they knew how to handle themselves as play moved to the decisive third set. This set was close just like the previous two sets. But EG and KG were mentally tough as a couple of service breaks gave them a 4-3 lead midway through the set. After a break of Knox, KG served for the match. And in fitting fashion, KG finished the match with a beautiful service ace to give Southwood a 6-3 win in set three.
The girls will return to The Culver Academies Thursday to play Peru in the next round of the Individual Doubles Sectional at 5:30 PM.
