Spartans drop opener

HUNTINGTON, IND. – Even in the midst of senior goalkeeper Caroline Smith (Mason, Ohio) compiling her eighth career double-digit save total, Huntington University managed a massive first attack to upend Manchester University Friday, August 31.

Smith repelled 11 Forester on frame tries, but HU’s wave at the Spartans’ defense managed to produce a string of five goals in the opening 25 minutes at King Stadium. The remaining 65 minutes saw head coach Christine Johnson’s crew surrender only two home scores as part of a 7-0 defeat.

On the offensive side of the 2018 season starter, junior midfielder/forward Katie Green (Chesterton, Ind.) and freshman forward Jayden Murray (Delphi, Ind.) both got attempts near the home net. However, in each case, Huntington University netminder Danielle Dehner kept the home clean sheet intact.

Manchester University continues its schedule by stepping on the Good Field pitch in North Manchester for the first time Wednesday, Sept. 5. Kickoff against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association foe Olivet College is 4 p.m.
