Hope, Calvin topple Black and Gold

Manchester University opened up a robust nonconference calendar for the 2018 season Friday and Saturday, August 31, and Saturday, September 1.

Head coach Corey Brueggeman’s side faced off against traditional Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional and NCAA Division III national powers Hope College and Calvin College. Friday’s visit to Holland saw the host Flying Dutchmen break away from a late first-half scoreless tie to post a goal before halftime and two more after the intermission to win 3-0, while Saturday’s trek to Grand Rapids finished with a convincing 8-0 decision for the host Knights.

Eight different Spartans registered shot attempts, as junior midfielder Alex Baker (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and junior defender Brandon Renninger (Fort Wayne, Ind.) tallied a shot on frame each. Defensively, senior goalkeeper Justin Meredith (Shelbyville, Ind.) compiled 13 saves in a pair of net starts.

MU kicks off its home schedule Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7 and 8.
