Manchester University head wrestling coach Kevin Lake and interim head volleyball coach Ivan Matos announced assistant coach hirings Tuesday, September 4.
Matthew Cavallaris joins the Black and Gold wrestling staff., while Mike Morici is a new coach for the Spartans’ volleyball program.
Cavallaris, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Community and Nonprofit Leadership from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in December 2015, spent the past two seasons on the staff at Wheaton College of Illinois and was instrumental in the development of 2018 NCAA Division III national runner-up Carlos Fuentes. He has previously served as an assistant coach for the Fox Valley Wrestling Club and Overtime School of Wrestling in Naperville, Ill.
A 2015 graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Cavallaris was a four-year letterman for the Badgers at 125 pounds. An Asics All-American, he wrestled at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, Ill., and was named a top recruit for his weight class by InterMat in 2010. A four-time Illinois state high school freestyle champion, Cavallaris was a member of Team Illinois all four years and an All-American at the Fargo Junior Freestyle Nationals.
Morici, who gained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Media and Public Communication from Purdue University at Fort Wayne in December 2008, had previously been the men’s program head coach at Adrian College of Michigan from July 2014-17. His coaching resume also has stops at John Jay High School in New York where he was head junior varsity coach (August-November 2012) and Defiance College of Ohio where he was an assistant coach for the women’s team from August to December in 2011.
His volleyball knowledge doesn’t stop with coaching experience. Morici competed on the former Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne Mastodons’ squad where he played for a conference finalist and NCAA Division I Final Four and national runner-up while ranking among the top 20 twice nationally in digs.
