Spartans stopped in home opener

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – A late first-half scoring flurry by visiting Olivet College of Michigan was the turning point of a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference – Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association match-up Wednesday, September 5.

After head coach Christine Johnson’s defense kept the non-conference meeting scoreless for better than half of the opening frame, the Comets reeled off four tallies in a span of just over 13 minutes to post a 4-0 halftime advantage. Senior goalkeeper Caroline Smith (Mason, Ohio), who recorded her ninth career double-digit save outing with 15, and her back line teammates nearly matched another clean second 45 minutes, as they had accomplished in the season opener at Huntington, before Olivet picked up two more goals in the waning moments to wrap up the 6-0 final.

Four different Spartans fired off shot attempts on the Good Field pitch. Junior midfielder/forward Katie Green (Chesterton, Ind.) put one on the visiting frame to try and break up the opposing clean sheet, but her attempt was knocked away.

The Black and Gold wind up a home and away week Saturday, September 8, traveling to Rochester College of Michigan. Kickoff is 5 p.m. at RC’s Ultimate Soccer Arena.
