KALAMAZOO, IND. – Two sides who couldn’t have been more evenly matched were neck and neck throughout 90 minutes at Kalamazoo College’s Mackenzie Field Saturday, Sept. 15.
Manchester University, seeking a third successive win, took aim five times at the Hornets’ goal, and senior goalkeeper Justin Meredith (Shelbyville, Ind.) posted five saves. However, when the clock reached quadruple zeroes in the second half, Kalamazoo’s defensive clean sheet and a 41st-minute scoring strike were the difference in a 1-0 victory for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association member.
Sophomore forward Josh Gonzalez (Portage, Ind.), fresh off Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and United Soccer Coaches Division III Offensive Player of the Week awards, tallied five total shots, two of which were sent away by home team netminder Luke Kastran. Senior forward Jared Wondergem (Hudsonville, Mich.) and senior midfielder Samuel Tetteh-Quarshie also took aim at a tying score but were dashed in each attempt.
The Spartans (2-3) continue a weekend road trip Sunday, Sept. 16. Kickoff at DePauw University’s Reavis Stadium in Greencastle, Ind., is 3 p.m.
