SHELBYVILLE, IND. – Getting a glimpse of next month’s 2018 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships venue, Manchester University’s men’s and women’s team registered a pair of first five finishes at the inaugural Blue River Collegiate Invitational Saturday, Sept. 15.
Junior women’s standout Hannah Wappes (Columbia City, Ind.) was the top individual marker for head coach Geoff Lambert’s squads. She cruised to the individual championship, crossing the finish line at Blue River State Park in 24:02.7 to defeat the field by almost 25 full seconds with Earlham College’s Ana Sosa-Ebert finishing second (24:27.3). Senior Samina Qureshi (Columbia City, Ind.), placing 11th, and freshman Kelsey Tyler (Rochester, Ind.) wound up 14th to spotlight the Spartans’ 81-point tram total which was just two behind the Quakers for third.
MU’s men were guided by junior Daniel Baker (Okemos, Mich.) and sophomore Lucas Fontanez (Lowell, Ind.). Baker forged a best ten effort, taking seventh (28:03.3), and Fontanez was just one spot short of a similar ending (11th – 28:16.5). The Spartans posted 112 points in the team standings which put them fourth.
Manchester University continues its 2018 campaign Saturday, Sept. 29, traveling to Louisville, Ky., for the Greater Louisville Classic.
