The Wabash Lady Apaches needed a win Thursday to stay even with Maconaquah for the TRC lead and had to get that win at county rival Southwood. Wabash would take advantage of their much taller front line in a 25-18, 25-20, 25-23 win.
The youthful Lady Knights were scrappy the entire night, but costly errors that the Apaches capitalized on, plus a dominate front row were the difference.
In game one Wabash would jump out to a 7-4 lead, getting kills from Tabby Wagner and Sam Irgang before two Alissa Pershing kills tied the score. With Wagner rotating off the front row, sophomore Alivia Short would take over as Wabash went on a 7-2 run to grab a 14-9 lead. The Apaches would hold their five to six point lead, winning 25-18 on a Sam Irgang ace.
The Lady Apaches would come out swinging early in game two with Mariah Wyatt and Brooke Irgang leading the way to an 8-2 lead. The Knights would then find left hander Erin McGouldrick who smoked three kills and had a block as Southwood cut the Wabash lead to 13-12. With Wabash leading 14-12 Pershing would record a kill that sparked a 4-0 run by the Knights to grab a 16-14 lead. Reese Shepherd had two aces during the run. Wabash would respond with a 6-1 run for a 20-17 lead before going on to take game two 25-20.
Wabash looked as though they would take game three quickly, going to Short, Irgang and Wyatt to race out to an 11-5 lead and build that lead to 15-8. At 18-12 after a Wagner kill, Southwood would find a second wind. Marissa Metzger would lace a kill, followed by an ace from Ashley Smith and a kill from McGouldrick to cut the Apaches lead to 18-16. Mariah Wyatt stopped that run with a kill. Wabash was at game point at 24-19 when the Knights made one more push. Pershing would start with a kill and was followed by a Maggie Ball block. Two Wabash errors made it 24-23 before Short scored on a tip to end the game and the evening.
