NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – The image of senior right side hitter Haley Duncan (Albion, Ind.) has been a threatening one for opposing defenses of late.
You can add Franklin College to that list after her afternoon totals Saturday, Sept. 22.
Duncan, coming off Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week accolades after totaling three 20-plus-kill efforts in five matches, added a fourth such marker this season to lead interim head coach Ivan Matos’ team to a four-set win at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena. The returning first team all-conference honoree continued to make coaches and fans around the conference and beyond take notice with 25 successful attacks with only five errors in 42 attempts, good for a rousing .476 percentage.
She wasn’t the only Black and Gold front liner striking the ball with authority. Freshman middle/outside hitter Samantha Campbell (Brownsburg, Ind.) smashed 11, and senior middle hitter Hannah Tevis (Royal Center, Ind.) got a strong afternoon going with 10 kills of her own. Meanwhile, Manchester University’s back row didn’t allow many Grizzlies’ offensive attempts to find empty floor, as junior defensive specialist/libero Anna Marie Lawrie(Indianapolis, Ind.) reeled off her seventh straight match with 10-or-more digs (19), sophomore defensive specialist/libero Mackenzie Rooks (Columbus, Ind.) finished with 16, and senior outside hitter Kaitlin Mindiola (Coatsville, Ind.) added 13.
The Spartans’ 25-20, 23-25, 25-23, 25-15 victory highlighted a split of tri-match results. A high-flying Baldwin-Wallace University of Ohio squad, improving to 17-1, swept past the home side 25-16, 25-17, 25-14. Tevis was a tough puzzle for the Yellow Jackets’ defense, hammering eight kills and registering a .350 attack percentage, and Lawrie increased her double-digit digs’ string to eight (11).
Manchester University concludes a run of eight straight home matches Wednesday, Sept. 26. Rose-Hulman visits North Manchester for a conference contest that begins at 7:30 p.m.
