The Southwood and Manchester volleyball teams collided Thursday at Manchester with the Lady Knights out lasting the Squires 22-25, 25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 16-14.
With two evenly matched teams it was dog fight the entire evening. In game one the Lady Squires would jump out to a 3-0 lead off kills from Andrea Kahn and Kennidy Lauer, aided by an ace from Ali Sites. After a kill from Kayla Mays the Knights would then find Alissa Pershing who would record four kills while Lauer and Anna Osborne hit from the other side to tie the game 7-7. The game was tied 18-18 when Kahn and Lauer gave the Squires a 20-18 lead and held on to win 25-22.
Manchester would lead 6-4 in game two when once again the Knights would find Pershing who had three kills in a Southwood 5-0 run to grab a 9-6 lead. The Knights would extend their lead to 15-9 before the Squires started to chip away, taking advantage of Southwood miscues to cut the margin to 20-18. Pershing would answer with four kills down the stretch as Southwood took game two 25-20.
Southwood would go to Pershing and Erin McGouldrick early in game three, building a 9-4 lead before the Squires made a comeback, cutting the Knights lead to 12-11. Allison Steele would stop the Manchester run with a tip that started a 9-2 run for the Knights to open a 21-13 lead. At 22-14 the Squires would make a push, scoring four straight and 7 of the next 9 points to make it 21-21 before Maggie Ball drained a kill to end game three 25-21.
Leading 2-1 the Knights looked like they were going to run away with game four, opening an 11-5 lead off kills from Pershing, Mays and McGouldrick before the Squires turned the tide. Manchester would come roaring back, cutting the Southwoodlead to 15-14. The Knights would cling to a 20-17 lead when Kahn recorded a kill that started a 4-0 run to give Manchester a 21-20 lead. The Knights would tie the score before hitting the ball out of bounds three straight times to put the Squires up 24-21 before pulling off game four 25-23 and setting up the exciting game five.
Marissa Metzger would get a kill for Southwood early as the Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Squires found Eva Bazzoni for two kills and tied the score. With Manchester leading 12-9 the Knights would again fins Pershing and McGouldrick to tie the score at 12. At 13-13 the Squires would get a tip from Mackenzie day for a 14-13 lead before Ball tied the score. The Knights would then get a point on an out of bounds hit from the Squires before a Mays kill ended the game 16-14 and the night 3-2 in favor of Southwood.
