Working through a lengthy weather delay, the two Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference sides put on a thriller. A counter-attacking goal by TU’s Tyler Joy Brandon in the 20th minute and a salty Pioneer defense proved to be the two biggest differences in the outcome, but head coach Corey Brueggeman’s crew did provide some highlights.
Leading the way were a trio of Black and Gold players. Senior forward Samuel Tetteh-Quarshie (Accra, Ghana) fired a rocket as the sunlight faded away from North Manchester after the weather stoppage that drifted just left of the corner of the Pioneers’ goal in the waning moments; senior goalkeeper Justin Meredith (Shelbyville, Ind.) turned in four saves including a sprawling knock away of a penalty kick late in the first half; and senior forward Drake DeWitt (Columbia City, Ind.) managed four strong shot attempts that each just missed their mark.
The Spartans, dipping to 3-9-2 overall and 1-3 in the league, resumes conference action Wednesday, Oct. 10. They go under the lights at Franklin College for a 7:30 start.
