Good teams find a way to win, when things are not going their way and that’s just what the Southwood Knights did Friday, coming from behind to force overtime and defeat Tippecanoe Valley 21-20 for the TRC title. The win gave the Knights their third consecutive conference title.
With the rain pouring down and a snow flake showing up every now and then the sidelines looked like the banks of the Wabash river. With neither team being able to secure the ball early the Knights took advantage of a Valley mistake in the first. With the Vikings punting an arrant snap flew over the kickers head and the Knights made then pay. With 5:01 left in the first Gabe Lloyd found the end zone from 8yds out to give Southwood a 7-0 lead.
The Knights would take their lead to the second quarter before the Vikings got even with 7:30 to play in the half to tie the score 7-7. The ball would remain in the middle of the field for most of the remainder of the quarter as the game was tied at the half.
Valley would be the team to take advantage of a miscue in the third. The Vikings would block a Knights punt and score from 3yds out with 2:42 on the clock to lead 14-7 with a quarter to go.
Things were looking bleak for the Knights in the fourth as they just couldn’t get the machine running. The Knights got one more shot with just a couple minutes on the clock, methodically marching down the field. With 17.1 seconds left in the game Lloyd crossed the goal line from 2yds away to make it 14-13. At that point the Knights made the decision to go for two and the win, which they converted but were called for motion and had to retry. Southwood then decided to let Jackson Simons kick the extra point, which he made to tie the score.
After the kick off Valley decided to let the clock run out and take it to overtime.
The Knights won the coin flip and elected to play defense first. Starting on the 10yl in overtime, Valley would quickly score. The Knights would respond by blocking the extra point to set up the exciting finish. Now the Knights had the ball on the 10yl and worked the ball to the 3 with 4th down looking them in the face. With the rain coming down the Knights shocked everyone when they went to the air. Alex Farr would fake a hand off to Lloyd, drawing the defense to the middle and hit Carson Heath on the right side who dove into the end zone to tie the score. The extra point snap was perfect and so was Jackson Simon’s kick as the Knights won the TRC 21-20.
