The Northfield Norsemen had a couple opportunities slip through their hands Friday as they fell to #2 Adams Central 34-23 in sectional play.
The Norse defense would stop the high powered offense of Adams Central to start the game before the visitors returned the favor on the Norse first possession. With both teams running most of the time the clock was moving fast. The Flying Jets would be the first to score on a 3yd run with 2:56 left in the quarter for a 7-0 lead after one.
The Norse had the first possession of the second quarter with Graydon Holmes kicking a 37yd field goal with 11:03 on the clock to make the score 7-3. In an action packed quarter Adams Central would answer with another drive that resulted in a 3yd touchdown and a 14-3 lead. The Norse would then cough the ball up with the Flying Jets picking up the fumble and racing 55yds for a 20-3 lead with 5:22 left. Again the Norse had an answer, marching down the field and scoring on fourth down when Levi Fulkerson found Cole Rosen from 10yds out with 1:16 left in the half to make it 20-10. With little time left the Norse needed a stop with Adams Central marching down the field. The Flying Jets ran a sweep to the right that the Norse had contained before running back Logan Macklin reversed direction and raced 29yds for the touchdown with 12 seconds left to give Adams Central a 27-10 lead at the half.
The Norse would get the lone score of the third quarter when Holmes took a left sweep 42yds to pay dirt with 3:42 left to close the deficit to 27-17.
Midway though the fourth Adams Central would tack on a score with 4:44 left in the game to increase their lead to 34-17. The Norse would hustle down the field with Fulkerson hitting Jared Peas for a long gain before scoring on a Fulkerson 2yd run with 1:26 on the clock to make it 34-23. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by Adams Central as they ran the clock out for the win.
