The Southwood Lady Knights would open their TRC season 1-0 with a wire-to-wire 39-34 victory over Rochester Saturday night.

A solid start by the Knights to jump ahead 4-0 with a basket from Sydney Helfin and 2 free throws from Erin Lehner. Sierra Stout would add a field goal and two 3-pointers by MaKenna Pace would set a nice tone to lead 12-5 after one period. The 2nd period was mainly at the free throw line for both teams as Rochester would close the gap minimally to 19-14.

The 2nd half would see mini-runs by both teams back and forth. Morgan Farr became a 1-woman wrecking crew for a brief stint in the 3rd period scoring 6 points after steals. Rochester would close the gap down to 31-30 with only a few minutes remaining. Erin Lehner would convert on a big 3 point basket to re-capture the momentum. Kayla Mays pulled 2 huge offensive rebounds in the closing minutes, 1 putback and another long hustle rebound thrown off a Zebra. The LadyKnights would finish the game off at the free throw line to win 39-34.

Coach West quote “Huge win for us. Caps off a solid week, a bounce back win after tough loss Wednesday night. First win at home this year. 1-0 in the TRC. But the biggest takeaway is learning how to win a close game, fighting for 32 minutes. Our defensive focus was fantastic tonight, holding their leading scorer to 1 point and only 4 shot attempts, and shutting out their 2nd leading scorer in the 2nd half with 0 shot attempts. Our primary defense was excellent, giving up offensive rebounds was our only pitfall tonight on D, leading to most of their points. Great team effort with contributions from all 7 who played.”
