Four County Champs Crowned

Four champions were crowned in the Wabash County basketball tournament Saturday at Manchester.

Winning championships were the Manchester girls junior varsity, Wabash boys junior varsity, Northfield varsity girls and Wabash varsity boys.

The first varsity championship game was between the Northfield and Manchester girls. The Lady Norse jumped out to a large first quarter lead before having to fend off a Manchester second quarter run. The Norse led just 29-25 at the half before winning 61-46.

Northfield jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Ariel Dale led off the game with a three and was followed with buckets from Kyra Kennedy and Kelcie Thomson. Emma West kept the Squires close with 5 points in the quarter as Northfield led 18-9 after one.Thomson and Ally Keaffaber also had long balls for the Norse in the quarter.

The Squires would get back in the game in the second. Trailing 23-14 Kiera Hatfield would hit three straight buckets to slice the Norse lead to 23-20. The Squires would play even with the Norse the remainder of the quarter with Addi Baker hitting before the buzzer to make it 29-25.

The Norse would take control of the game in the third, scoring the first 8 points of the quarter and 14 of the first 19. Five different players scored during the run as the Norse built a 43-30 lead. Manchester would answer with the last five points to make it 43-35 after three.

Tourney MVP Kelcie Thomson would lead the way for the Norse in the fourth, hitting two buckets before converting five free throws down the stretch to secure the win. Manchester’s Kennedy Fierstos scored 8 points in the quarter.

Northfield scoring : Dale 12, Keaffaber 8, Thomson 23, Kennedy 10, Baker 8

Manchester scoring : Cripe 4, Fierstos 17, West 5, Hatfield 6, Bazzoni 12, Lauer 2.

The last game of the night between the Wabash and Southwood boys was a thriller. The Apaches had a comfortable 10 point lead at the half before the Knights made a charge and grabbed a fourth quarter lead before Wabash responded to take the title 57-54

Braden Barney would give Southwood a 2-0 lead to start the game before the Apaches responded with 7 straight. Dereck Vogel started the run with a three point play and was followed with buckets from Elijah Vander Velden and Trenton Daughtry. The Apaches built their lead to 11-4 when the Knights responded. Gabe Lloyd hit a free throw followed by buckets from Simons and Carson Rich to slice the Wabash lead to 11-9. Wabash led 15-12 after one.

The Apaches would ride a series of small runs in the second to build a 10 point lead by the half. Daughtry would lead the charge with 13 points in the quarter Dallas Holmes had 7 for the Knights. Wabash led 38-28 at the half

Southwood would make their move in the third. After a Daughtry bucket gave the Apaches a 40-28 lead a Holmes bucket and a three from Lloyd made it 40-33. At 41-33 Holmes, Rich and Lloyd all scored to close the gap to 41-39. Elijah Vander Velden stopped the run with a bucket before two Rich buckets tied the score at 43. Blake Gribben scored the final bucket of the quarter as the Apaches clung to a 45-43 lead after three.

The Knights would grab their first lead of the game to start the fourth quarter. Luke Winer tied the score before Simons scored 5 straight and Southwood led 50-45. Daughtry would respond with a three and a free throw to make it 50-49 before Lloyd made it 52-49. With Southwood up 54-51 Vogel would hit two free throws, followed by a Jared Holley bucket off a steal to put Wabash up 55-54. The Knights would miss their next shot attempt before fouling Holley who made both free throws for a 57-54 lead. Southwood had one more attempt to tie the score that failed as Wabash held on for the win.

Southwood scoring : Lloyd 12, Holmes 12, Rich 10, Simons 11, Winer 2, Barney 4, Farr 3

In the girls consolation game the Southwood Lady Knights defeated Wabash 39-27.

The Knights led at every stop, riding a 7-0 run to end the first quarter for a 9-6 lead. Southwood led 22-13 at the half and increased their lead to 30-16 after three before winning 39-27

Southwood scoring : Pace 7, Lehner 5, Farr 12, Mays 4, Stout 13

Wabash scoring : Unger 9, Graf 2, Wyatt 4, Short 10

Manchester and Northfield fought for the boys consolation game, needing overtime before the Squires grabbed a 66-56 win.

Manchester led 8-5 after one and 27-19 at the half before the Norse worked their way back in the second half. Northfield out scored Manchester 16-12 in the third and 35-27 in the second half to force the OT. Tied at 56 the Squires would score the last 10 point of the game with 6 coming from the free throw line.

Manchestser scoring : Parrett 4, Casper 15, Lester 19, Hamby 19, Creager 2, Stout 1, Underwood 2, Krull 4

Northfield scoring : Tomlinson 18, L. Peas 19, J. Peas 11, Holmes 8

The girls junior varsity championship was won by Manchester over Southwood 23-13.

Manchester scoring : Garriott 3, Shambarger 3, Meyer 4, Parrett 7, Day 6

Southwood scoring : Barney 5, Smith 4, Ball 2, Wyatt 2

Wabash defeated Southwood 44-29 for the boys junior varsity championship.

Wabash scoring : O’Neill 10, Reed 12, Wilson 1, Walter 11, Carmichael 1, Cole 3, Leland 6

Southwood scoring : Lopez 8, Barley 3, Holloway 3, Winer 8, Filip 7
