Squires/Apaches Cruise In Sectional Openers

The Manchester and Wabash basketball teams both opened sectional play at Oak Hill Tuesday with each putting clicking on all cylinders.

The Manchester Squires opened the 2019 Oak Hill sectional with a bang, hitting 8 three pointers in the first half and 11 for the game in route to a 53-33 win over Rochester.

Thane Creager would get the Squires going with a three before a Rochester bucket made it 3-2. From that point it was lights out. Brayden Casper would drain a three that ignited a 22-0 run by the Squires that ran into the second quarter. A second Creager three and one from Caleb Stout ended the first quarter with Manchester leading 16-2.

Manchester would remain hot to start the second quarter with Weston Hamby hitting two long balls, followed by a Stout three for a 25-3 lead. Hamby would hit two more times in the quarter, one being from behind the arch for a 32-9 lead at the half.

The pace would slow a bit early in the third before picking up. A Hamby free throw and a three from Creager increased the lead to 36-9. Two Casper buckets made it 39-11. Creager would hit a second long ball while Casper and Stout added buckets as the Squires were cruising 48-18 after three.

Rochester would hit the first two buckets of the fourth quarter before Logan Parrett made it 50-21. The Squires would then go to ball control, getting one more bucket which was a three from Stout in the 53-33 win.

With the win Manchester will now play Lewis Cass Friday at 6:00 in the first semi final game

The Wabash Apaches would play game two of the opening night of the Oak Hill sectional, falling behind 4-0 before responding with a 26-1 run to end the quarter in route to an 86-35 win over North Miami.

Trailing 4-0 to start the game the Apaches would get a bucket from Blake Gribben that ignited a 12-0 run. Wabash also got buckets from Trenton Daughtry and Dereck Vogel with Jared Holley and Logan Vander Velden making it 12-4. Leading 12-5 Daughtry would score 13 of the next 15 points with Vander Velden adding a bucket. The Apaches led 26-5 after one.

North Miami would hit a free throw to start the second quarter before the Apaches went running again. Kallen Kelsheimer would start a 17-0 run that pushed the Wabash lead to 43-6. Daughtry would hit two long balls during the run. Kelsheimer and Vogel would then take over, scoring the last 8 points as the Apaches led 51-15 at the half.

Wabash would score the first 6 points of the third quarter, getting a bucket from Elijah Vander Velden before Vogel drained a three. The Apaches would continue their hot streak from the field, building their lead to 71-20 with Jasper Walter draining a three while. Holley also hit a long ball while Blake Gribben led the third quarter charge with 8 points. Wabash led 75-23 after three.

Wyatt Davis would lead the Apaches in the fourth with 5 points while Kelsheimer added four and Jesse Allison 2. Wabash went on for the 86-35 win.

The Apaches will play Oak Hill in the second semi final game Friday.
