County Wrestlers At HYWAY State
29 Members of the Wabash County Wrestling Cub wrestled in the HYWAY State Tournament in Peru Saturday. It was quite a day and by far the biggest tournament that a lot of our boys had ever been to, and for 10 of our wrestlers this was their first time at the State Tournament. The meet keeps growing year after year and this year was no exception as there was nearly 650 participants wrestling on 12 mats. Some of the boys were in round-robin brackets and some were in traditional brackets having as many as 12-14 per weight class. The tournament placed the top 8 wrestlers and the true brackets were ran in a double elimination fashion. Those wrestling hard but not making the top 8 were Grayson Harner, Trent Osborn, Brayden Sickafus and Matt Carey. Kody Stambaugh placed 7th, Jared Holmes, Jaxon Barnett and Logan Carey placed 6th while Ethan Higgins was our lone 5th place finisher. Earning 4th place honors was Ashton Good, Izaak Pennington, JD Trisler, Kamron Honeycutt, uentin Moore and Blayne Powell. Kaden Rody, Keaton Fields, Tyler Miller, Grant Warmuth, Drew Clark and Austin all earned hard fought 3rd place medals. Those making it to the finals but coming up short and earning a much coveted state runner up medal was Dylan Osborn, Dylan Stroud, Hunter Jones, Jared Brooks, Braden Brooks, Logan Cox, Zac Gunter and Clayton Moore.
Big Ten Wrestling Championships Has Local Ties
The Big Ten wrestling championships were held at the University of Illinois this past weekend, with four Wabash county residents playing a major role in the event running without a hitch.
Scottie Pennington, Doug Pennington, Terry Faust and Cary Hammel all had different jobs that were very important in keeping the tournament running smooth.
We tracked down Scottie Pennington to explain exactly what each persons responsibilities were.
Pennington ” There were 4 of us in attendance at the 2013 Big 10 Wrestling Tournament at the University of Illinois. Terry Faust was assigned to video one mat for the entire tournament, which was quite a responsibility, as any and all coaches challenges utilized his film for review. Cary Hammel was what they call a runner. His role was to run bout cards back and forth from the table at mat 2 to the main table. Doug Pennington was sitting at the table on Mat 1 most of the weekend doing the score sheets and Scottie Pennington was assigned to the staging area. My job was to ensure each and every wrestler knew what mat to be on and make sure they are there on time. We are very happy for the opportunity be a part of such an event. We saw some great wrestling and had a blast all weekend.
Pictured below are Doug and Scottie Pennington with Tom Brands (head coach) and twin brother Terry Brands (Asst. Head Coach) of Iowa.
