Eichenauer, Mahmoud highlight week’s action

Beginning a span of three straight duals on the road, Manchester University was defeated by National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ foe Grace College and Rose-Hulman in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action Thursday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 29.

At Terre Haute Saturday, freshman Vanessa Mahmoud (South Bend, Ind.) took the Fightin’ Engineers’ Kai Faulk to the third set at number three singles before being defeated. Interim head coach Dr. Wendy Hoffman’s side also had sophomore Karly Eichenauer (North Manchester, Ind.) just miss a victory in the first set at number singles, as Anna Thompson had to gain a 7-4 tiebreaker decision in route to a sweep.

The Lancers picked up a similar 9-0 team victory over the Spartans (0-7 overall, 0-5 HCAC) Thursday. MU returns to the courts Thursday, Oct. 4, at Anderson University.

HCAC campaign begins on road

LEXINGTON, KY. – The freshman doubles tandem of Madeline Russo (Logansport, Ind.) and Vanessa Mahmoud (South Bend, Ind.) battled to three game victories, headlining Manchester University’s fall season opener Saturday, Sept. 15.

Taking on the Pioneers’ Merrick Irwin and Reagan Jobe at the number three slot, Mahmoud and Russo were stopped 8-3. Mahmoud came back at number six singles and earned a combined three game decisions before falling 6-2, 6-1. Fellow first-year team member Morgan Brazo (Claypool, Ind.) turned in three game victories at number four singles, too, with a similar result as Mahmoud.

MU looks to rebound in its 2018 fall season home opener Thursday, Sept. 20, against Defiance College. First serve is 5:15 p.m.
