The Southwood Lady Knights got off to a great start Saturday, leading Huntington after the first quarter before falling to the Vikings 44-21.

Southwood led 9-8 after the first stop. Trailing 3-0 Sierra Stout made it 3-2 and was followed by a Alissa Pershing three for a 5-3 lead. Erin Lehner would end the 7-0 run with a bucket before the next Vikings score. Pershing would hit one more time as Southwood led 9-8 after one.

After the first quarter lead the Knights would not hit another field goal until the third quarter. Southwood managed just two free throws in the second quarter while Huntington reeled off 11 points for a 19-11 lead at the half.

Stout would get the first bucket of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 19-13 which would be the only bucket of the quarter as the Knights trailed 29-14 after three.

Two free throws from Makenna Pace started the scoring in the fourth before Huntington scored the next 11 points. Pace would hit two more free throws and a bucket as the Knights fell 44-21.

Coach West quote “Unofficial stats of only 11 turnovers–by far the best we’ve had in our 2 years, another nice improvement we’re seeing. Also a great team effort of rebounding, limiting the much taller Vikings to few 2nd chance opportunities. Although everyone contributed to the task, Kayla Mays and Sydney Helfin especially worked their tales off tonight to slow down Huntington’s leading player. She scored only 4 points from their set offense in 30 minutes of play, 3 points on a broken transition play and 2 on an offensive putback. Great defensive effort the entire night. Our poor shooting percentage did not carry over and adversely affect our defensive focus and determination. Very proud of that effort. Offensively, we need to take better shots, and it always helps to put a few more in the circle.”
