Lady Apaches Defend Home Turf Against Bluffton
The Wabash Lady Apaches trailed 3-0, but never trailed again as they defeated Bluffton 61-49 Tuesday.
Bluffton would score the first 3 points of the game before the Apaches would respond with a 13-0 run. Hope Unger got Wabash going and scored 7 points in the quarter. During the run Mariah Wyatt and Tabby Wagner would hit. With Wabash up 13-3 the Tigers would respond with back to back three pointers to make it 13-9 before Wyatt ended the scoring with Wabash leading 15-9 after one.
Wabash was leading 17-13 in the second when Wyatt hit two field goals wrapped around two free throws from Wagner for a 23-13 lead. Bluffton would cut the lead to 23-16 before Alivia Short and Abby Vinopal hit back to back buckets, giving Wabash a 27-16 halftime lead.
The Lady Apaches were cruising in the third quarter after buckets from Short and Wyatt when the Tigers made a move. Bluffton would score 10 straight points to cut the Apaches lead to 30-28 when Unger drained a three to ease the pain. Unger would hit two long balls in the quarter while Wyatt and Short dominated the boards. Wabash led 44-39 after three.
The game would remain tight in the fourth until 48-42 when the Apaches got some much needed relief. Wyatt would hit a free throw and a bucket, followed by two Nici Gunderman free throws and a bucket from Short to make it 55-42. Bluffton would never get closer than 10 points after the run as Wabash defeated the Tigers 61-49.
Hope Unger led the Lady Apaches with a game high 19 points , while Mariah Wyatt and Alivia Short added 17 and 13. Wyatt also pulled down 12 rebounds and Abby Vinopal dished out 5 assists to pace Wabash. Nici Gunderman had 2 points, Vinopal 3 and Tabby Wagner 6.
The Wabash junior varsity defeated Bluffton.
