Manchester Tennis Sweeps Columbia City
The Manchester tennis team was fortunate to squeeze in a tennis match at Columbia City in between rain showers. The opening match for each team saw the Lady Squires sweep all matches played before rain halted JV matches in progress.
First off for Manchester were the singles players of Halle Briner and Eva Bazzoni. Both players let their athleticism shine in route to comfortable, quick victories. “Halle excelled in coming to the net and being the aggressor tonight. It was a good match to work on her all around game.” Meanwhile, Bazzoni used her strong serve and pinpoint groundstrokes to win easily. “Eva is going to be a fun player to watch this year in only her second year of tennis. Her game has really advanced, and she’s a winner!” The third win came from the senior double team of Anna Osborne and Halie Wampler. After losing two of the first three games, they got on a roll winning the next 5 games to take set one. Again in set two they lost game one but gained confidence taking the last 6 games and match. “Anna and Halie are really communicating and moving well together on the court. They are creating a balanced mix of solid serves, topspin groundstrokes, and aggressive net play.” The two doubles duo of junior Rebekah Pyle and freshman Alyssa Marvel also showed good chemistry. After winning a quick 6-0 first set, they started off 1-0 before dropping a pair of games. Down 1-2, Pyle and Marvel’s shotmaking took over winning the final 5 games. “Rebekah is such a steady, positive player who makes players around her better. Alyssa is really impressing with her excellent groundstrokes and desire to win. She’s a competitor!” The final varsity point was earned by senior Kelsey Eichenauer. After slow starts in each set (0-1 and 1-2), Eichenauer found her winning shots and strategy to take the remaining 6 (6-1) and 5 (6-2) games to close out each set. “Kelsey will bring her senior leadership each match just as she does in practice. Her groundstroke winners were fun to watch tonight.”
In JV play sophomores Alexa Donathan, Roma Kaur, and Margaret Myers all won with ease. “We look forward to these three fine players to keep improving each day in order to help us win future varsity matches and repeat for a fourth straight TRC and Sectional titles. All three have played well in practice and continue to impress.” Senior Morgan Stroud paired with freshman Kayla Hippensteel to dominate 8-0 at JV 1 doubles. “Morgan has a winning serve and really knows strategy while Kayla has a bright future for Manchester Tennis.” The remaining JV matches were either in progress or yet to go on the courts when a cold, light rain ended play. Manchester travels to Wabash on Thursday for a TRC matchup and participates in the Warsaw Invitational on Saturday with the likes of several state ranked teams: #3 Munster, #9 Homestead, #17 Penn, and district ranked teams: Valparaiso, Elkhart Memorial, Fishers, and host Warsaw.
