NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Manchester University baseball team dropped a pair of home contests to visiting Defiance College as Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play continued on Tuesday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets won by final scores of 14-7 and 7-3 at Gratz Field.

Game 1 Defiance 14, Manchester 7

The Yellow Jackets’ offense pounded out 18 hits in the game one victory on Tuesday afternoon. Six Defiance players had multi-hit efforts at the plate and three players had three or more hits. DC also hit three home runs in the first game.

Both teams traded leads through the first five innings of the contest, but the Yellow Jackets scored eight runs in the top of the sixth to seize control of the game.

For the Spartans, both Braxton Riley (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Wayne) and Nick Rush (Terre Haute, Ind. / Terre Haute North) collected three hits and each scored once. Rush also drove in an RBI. Christian Smith (Indianapolis, Ind. / Mt. Vernon) led Manchester with three RBI. Smith delivered a two-run single in the fifth that gave the Spartans a momentary 6-5 lead.

Game 2 Defiance 7, Manchester 3

After allowing a run in the top of first, Manchester answered right back with two runs of its own in the home half of the first inning to grab an early, one-run lead. Matt Pritz (LaPorte, Ind. / LaPorte) laced a two-run single down the left-field line that score Braxton Riley and Tyler LaFollette (Warsaw, Ind. / Warsaw).

The Yellow Jackets retook the lead after scoring twice in the top of the fourth inning. Defiance added three more runs in the seventh and one in the eighth.

Defiance’s starting pitcher, Jon Brown, settled in following the first inning and threw 8.1 solid innings. Brown allowed just three runs, while scattering eight hits. He earned his third win of the season.

Joe Henschel (Huntertown, Ind. / Huntertown) homered for the third time this season in the bottom of the ninth.

Manchester fell to 3-7 in HCAC play in 2019. Defiance moved back to .500 in league play following its two wins this afternoon. Defiance is now 5-5 in the HCAC.

The Spartans will travel to Cincinnati on Friday April 19 for a doubleheader at Mount St. Joseph. Game one on Friday will begin at Noon.
