FRANKLIN, Ind. – Manchester fell on the road in a pair of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference games on Monday evening at Franklin College. The Grizzlies won by final scores of 9-2 and 6-5.
Game One – Franklin 9, Manchester 2
The Grizzlies held the Spartans to two runs on six hits in the first game on Monday evening.
Manchester scored single runs in the top of the third and fourth innings and led 2-1 before the Grizzlies rallied with five runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Alexis Mokos (Cedar Lake, Ind. / Hanover Central) went 2-3 and drove in a run. Corey Uetrecht (Leo, Ind. / Leo) went 1-3 with an RBI.
Game Two – Franklin 6, Manchester 5
The Spartans dropped a hard-fought 6-5 decision in game two of the day.
Both Manchester and Franklin were locked in a pitcher’s duel for the bulk of the contest as neither side was able to score until the fifth inning.
The Grizzlies scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. FC extended its advantage to 4-0 after plating a pair in the bottom of the sixth.
Manchester mustered a rally in the seventh, scoring five times to take a late, one-run lead. With the bases loaded, Krystal Sellers (Bourbon, Ind. / Triton) hit an RBI single to left. Kendal Torrence (Lowell, Ind. / Lowell) then walked to force another Manchester run home. With two outs, Alexis Mokos hit a bases clearing shot to right center that gave MU its first lead of the ball game. Mokos was thrown out trying to advance to second on the play.
Franklin College got its first two base runners aboard in the bottom of the seventh. After a sac bunt put those two runners in scoring position, Danielle Wyse singled to right to tie the game at 6-6. Abby Hickson then delivered the walk-off base hit.
Franklin College improved to 15-13, 7-3 HCAC this season. Manchester dropped to 10-18, 4-6 HCAC. The Spartans will be back at home tomorrow against Alma College beginning at 3:30 p.m.
