The Wabash Apaches opened sectional play Thursday, coming from behind to defeat Rochester 8-4.
Rochester would plate 3 runs in the second and 1 in the top of the third before the Apaches got things going. In the bottom of the third Wabash would draw even.
Jasper Walter would get things going, reaching on a dropped third strike before Trenton Daughtry followed reaching on an error. Robert Irgang would then walk to load the bases before a Kallen Kelsheimer singled chased home Walter and Daughtry to make it 4-2. Blake Gribben would follow with a double that scored Irgang to make it 4-3. With one out Bryant Boggs would lay down a perfect bunt with Kelsheimer scoring for the 4-4 tie.
Heading to the bottom of the sixth still tied Wabash would have a big inning again. Joe Leland would lead off reaching on an error. Pinch runner Braden Sickafus would grab second on a wild pitch before taking third on a Jared Brooks sacrifice bunt. With two outs Daughtry would single home Sickafus to give the Apaches their first lead of the game at 5-4 before Kelsheimer drew a walk. Gribben would then single to right with Daughtry and Irgang scoring for a 7-4 lead, followed by a Payton Sodervick single that scored Kelsheimer to make it 8-4.
The Apaches would hold off the Zebras in the seventh for the 8-4 win.
