Lady Apaches Soccer Still Making History

The Lady Apache soccer program made program history again Tuesday with a 3-2 win over Lakeland Christian

This being the first time Wabash has defeated Lakeland Christian Academy. The Lady Apache struck first, with an unassisted goal by senior Nici Gunderman. It didn’t take long for Lakeland to tie the game back up with a high-arching ball to the back of our net. The Lady Apaches continued to stay solid defensibly and move the ball upfield to create attacks. Sophomore Rylee Yoakum created enough space to take a shot from outside the 18 and buried it! The Apaches went into halftime 2-1.

Both Lakeland and Wabash continued to apply offensive pressure and Lakeland once again found the back of the net and tied the game back up at 2 goals apiece. In the last 3 minutes of the game the Apaches has 2 near misses wide on Lakeland’s goal and one crossbar – they just continued to battle in the last minutes of the game. With 16 seconds remaining, Wabash earned a direct kick just outside the 18 and Rylee Yoakum soared it right over the keeper for the game-winning goal! Defensively, goalkeeper Hannah Layne had 8 saves on the night and Morgan Mallow, Kalista Ballshimdt, Kiersten O’Neill, Abbie Boggs, Nici Gunderman all contributed to great defensive stops. Freshman Kiana Jones played an incredible defensive game! Offensively Mallow, Davis, Yoakum, Lutz and Gunderman all had shots for the Apaches. Libby Mattern continues to be incredibly solid in the the midfield for the Wabash. Tonight senior Madi Lutz probably not only had her best game offensively as our striker, but was praised by both the opposing team and the officials on her outstanding sportsmanship! The Lady Apaches move to 5-1-1 on the season and play again Thursday at 6:00 where they will take on Blackford on beautiful Alumni Field!
