The Apaches netters had a good day at the 2022 Logan Invite this past Saturday.

The team played well in various spots, finding individual wins, and was also able to avenge an earlier in the week loss to TRC foe Tipp Valley, besting the Vikings 4-1 in team play.

Wabash began play at 9:00 am drawing a match with a strong Lewis Cass team. Lewis Cass played in the chamiponship round, finising second in the tournament. The boys played well, but ultimatley lost to a senior heavy team 1-4. Picking up a win for the Apaches was Eli Mattern at 3 singles (6-4, 6-3). Competing hard in that match as well for the Apaches was Alex Dinkins losing in a competitive 2 set match.

In the second round of the day, Wabash had a rematch with Tipp Valley. The boys were able to pull off a good win over Valley 4-1. Solid play at 3 singles lead Eli Mattern to a 6-0, 6-3 win. 2 Doubles (Ashton Coffman and Troy Guenin-Hodson) followed suit winning handily 6-0, 6-2. The matches of the day came at 2 singles and 1 doubles. Alex Dinkins pulled out a win 6-2, 3-6, TB 10-4 to seal the win for the Apaches. Adding a win for good measure was 1 doubles (Cooper Long and Dominic Baker) besting Vally 1 Dubs 6-3, 2-6, TB 10-5.

Wabash faced LaPorte in match number 3 on the day. Playing proset matches to 8, the Slicers were able to pull of a tight 3-2 win over the Apaches to end both teams day. Winning for Wabash was Eli Mattern at 3 singles with a score of 8-5 and 2 Doubles (Coffman and Guinen-Hodson) with a 9-7 thriller.

It was a good day for the up and coming Apache Tennis team. Picking apart the stats Wabash picked up a team win. Also as a team, 7 individual matches were won by the boys. Coach Mattern shared, “It was a good day moving towards our goal of continual improvement. The boys played well, and picked up a team win against some solid competition. Our next area of growth is to finish individual matches with a stronger more focused approach. When a player or doubles team starts strong with a lopsided first set win, we need to keep that momentum and finish with a 2 set win. Age and expereince are certainly factors in such situations; however we have played 9 team matches now so the focus and will to win should be there for all of us regardless of grade. Avoiding any kind of let down after a first set win will be crucial to our success moving forward.”

Individual Stats:

1 Singles – Nicholas Ewing 0-3

2 Singles – Alex Dinkins 1-2

3 Singles – Eli Mattern 3-0

1 Doubles – Cooper Long/Dominic Baker 1-2

2 Doubles – Asthon Coffman/Troy Guenin-Hodson 2-1
