Lady Squires Win County Soccer Battle Over Apaches

The Manchester girls soccer team defeated Wabash 3-1 Tuesday.

The Lady Squires battled tough for 80 minutes tonight. The ladies possessed the ball during the first half but fell short on all 12 of their shot attempts while the Lady Apaches finished a PK from a foul in the box. Manchester defense lead by Addie Brubaker, Ella Clifford, Maggie Onderko-White, Karsyn Kamphues, and Chase Blevins battled during the second half to keep Wabash scoreless. Grace Smith had 2 big saves in the net. About 15 minutes into the second half, London Spangle had a great corner kick that Molly Schannep sent to the back of the net to tie the game 1-1. The Apaches held the Squires until 3 minutes to go in the game when Samantha Shock ripped a shot from the outside. It bounced back out and Aymia Miller came up with the big finish to give the ladies a 2-1 lead with under 3 minutes to go in the game. Hannah Eberly finished the game off with a corner kick that found the side of the net. Campbell Bolinger, Sam Shock, Brookelynn Buzzard, and Jessi Perez also had some great shots that didn’t finish.

For Wabash Senior goalkeeper Hannah Layne played an absolutely amazing game, with 23 saves, including both PK shots Manchester was awarded. This puts Layne over the 500 mark, now with 515 career saves thus far for Wabash High School. Wabash took the lead of the game in the first half, when senior Rylee Yoakum was awarded a PK and burried it. Wabash remained up 1-0, until Manchester found the back of the net off a far-post cross to put the game at 1-1. Wabash and Manchester remained tied until 2:30 left in regulation until Manchester put 2 last minutes goals away. Wabash played with tremendous effort, leading the defense tonight was junior Kiana Jones, senior Libby Mattern, freshman Jaycee Jone and sophomore Macy VonUhl. Offensively the Lady Apaches were again lead by Yoakum, with junior Natalie Adams, junior Irma Robles and sophmore Kait Honeycutt adding shots on goal tonight. Wabash moves to 5-2 on the season and 4-1 in the TRC. Wabash is back in action on Thursday for a non-concerence game at Peru at 5:30.
