Lady Apaches Win Shoot Out Over Squires

The Wabash Lady Apaches advance to the Sectional #39 championship game on Saturday after defeating Manchester in a penalty shootout.

Wabash and Manchester remained scoreless throughout regulation and both overtime periods to lead to penalty kicks. Manchester started off the penalty round and senior goalkeeper Hannah Layne was able to keep it out of the back of the net which brought up the first shooter for the Lady Apaches sophomore Kait Honeycutt and she put it away low and to the corner to make it 1-0. Next the Lady Squires put away their first penalty kick, but senior Rylee Yoakum was up next for Wabash and she put her shot away too to make it 2-1. Layne makes her 2nd pk save to bring up senior Libby Mattern, who made her pk to put the Lady Apaches up 3-1. Layne made one last save which sent the Lady Apaches to win the game and advance in the tournament.

Layne had 22 saves on the night, with a tremendous defensive effort led by junior Kiana Jones with freshman Jaycee Jones, senior Libby Mattern and senior Abbie Boggs playing very tough defense as well. Junior Natalie Adams did a fantasic job centrally for the Lady Apaches with sophomore Kait Honeycutt and sophomore Abbi Hipskind playing the outside mid position and helping maintain possesion of the ball for Wabash. Yoakum led the team in offensive shots and kept the pressure on Manchester with help from sophomore Graci Napier and junior Talia Carrillo.

The Wabash Lady Apaches improve to 12-3 on the season and will take on Eastbrook at Eastbrook in the sectional championship game at 2pm on Saturday.

Manchester played well and had opportunities on goal but were unable to finish. Tough defense by Addison Brubaker, Ella Clifford, Chase Blevins, Maggie Onderko-White and Karsyn Kamphues held Wabash scoreless through regulation and overtime only allowing 7 shots. Campbell Bolinger, Samantha Shock, London Spangle and Jennifer Perez played well in the middle controling the ball and the field. Brookelynn Buzzard and Jessica Perez had opportunities on goal but came up short.
