The Wabash junior high girls basketball teams lost a pair of games to Southern Wells Tuesday

The 7th Grade Lady Apaches traveled to Southern Wells to take on the Lady Raiders for their season opener. Coach Yeadon and the girls entered the gym and noticed the size of the Lady Raiders. We knew their height was unmatched but that didn’t stop these 7 Lady Apaches from putting their jerseys on, their games faces and saying “bring it on.”

The Lady Apaches had a bit of a foggy start but played great defense and worked hard all game. Rozalynn Hicks did a fantastic job boxing out and pushing the Raiders out of the paint as well as fighting for every loose ball. Although, at the end of the night the Raiders put up more points, the intensity the Apaches had was unmatched. The Apaches put many shots up but unfortunately we couldn’t find the hoop. Overall, the Lady Apaches took on a very experienced and talented team but will keep grinding and look forward to hosting Eastbrook on December 5th. 7th grade starts at 6pm, 8th grade follows.

Rozalynn Hicks : 4 rebounds

Shannon King: 1 rebound

Caitlyn Shidler: 1 rebound

The Lady Apaches traveled to Southern Wells Tuesday night for their season opener. Over the last two weeks, the girl’s ephasis has been on being physical, and playing tough defense. The first quarter, the Apaches struggled to get going offensively, but played with tenacidy on defense. In the second quarter, the girls took it to another level. Their aggressive defense puzzled and intimidated Southwen wells, as the Apaches caused turnovers and out rebounded Southern Wells. Offensively, The Apaches got moving off of the turnovers and drove the lane hard causing Southwen Wells to foul and send the girls to the line. Southern Wells had no answers for the Apaches in the second quarter. The Apahes cut the lead to 10 going into the half.

The Apaches struggled in the second half. Shots did not fall, and there were some mental lapses which will happen in your first game. Southern Wells pulled away, and the Lady Apaches fell to a good Southern Wells team. The Apache aggressive defense was led by the play of Sally Harrell, Serenity Hubbard, Leeairah Hicks, and Shailynn Harrison. Paige Miller led the 8th grade team offensively with aggressive drives to the basket, and her passing ability on offense. New to playing basketball this year, Audri Shidler came off the bench and showed great aggressiveness rebounding and going after any loose ball.

“This was our first game. The score board doesn’t show it, but we were the most physical team. The girls didn’t back down the entire game. I was with this team all last year in 7th grade. I have never seen them play this agressive. It was the best I have seen them play. I can’t wait to see where we are once we have some more games under our belt.”

The Lady Apaches will have their home opener against Eastbrook Middle School Monday at 6pm in Coolman Gymnasium.
