Wabash/Manchester Swim Teams Split

The Wabash and Manchester swim teams split their meet Wednesday at the Wabash YMCA.

Wabash won the boys meet 93-41. Manchester took the girls meet 110-29

The Wabash Boys Swim Team broke the WHS school record in the 200 Free Relay in a win Wednesday night against Manchester at the Wabash County YMCA. Seth Blossom, Chase Howard, Nicholas Perkins, and Cael McCann took first place as they bested the record by over 1 second. The Wabash Girls lost to Manchester, but posted numerous season bests and personal records. Highlights are as follows.

Liam York was a double winner, but the Manchester boys swim team didn’t have the firepower to keep pace with Wabash on Wednesday night. York took first in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, posting lifetime bests in each. York also teamed up with Cale Bennett, Robbie Iaione, and Tristan Schmid to finish second in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. Bennett had a pair of second place finishes in the 200 and 500 freestyles. Iaione finshed third in the 50 freestyle and second in the 100 backstroke. Schmid took fourth in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 breaststroke, and Kenneth Martin took 5th in the 50 freestyle.

Wednesday night marked the final meet for exchange student Robbie Iaione who will return home to Italy tomorrow. Robbie has been a key contributor to the boys team over the first half of the season, and he’s been the life of the lane 3 party every day of practice.

The Manchester girls won 10 out of 11 events on Wednesday night to defeat Wabash 110-29. Josie Briner, Rachel Garcia, and Hannah Eberly were quadruple winners and Sophie Anglin was a triple winner for the Squires.

Manchester opened the meet with a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 Medley Relay. Noelle Walt, Eberly, Briner and Elena Lawrence teamed up for to take first. The team of Wynter Harris, Evyn Fox, Sophie Anglin, and Gracie Dale finished second and Laynen DeLaughter, Sofia Siano, Adia Selleck, and Lilli Meyer teamed up to take third.

In the 200 Freestyle, Eberly continued her strong season with a first place finish and Harris finished third. Briner easly won the 200 IM, and Lawrence, Anglin, and Sveva Cattaneo went 2-3-4 in the 50 freestyle.

Following the diving break, Rachel Garcia and Adia Selleck went 1-2 in the 100 butterfly, each swimming a season best time. Eberly, Lawrence and Noelle continued the string of season best times by finsihg 1-2-4 in the 100 freestyle. Next, Evyn Fox won the 500 freestyle, lowering her season best time in the process.

Garcia, Briner, Walt, and Anglin easily won the 200 freestyle relay and the team of Siano, Cattaneo, DeLaughter, and Sellect took third. Garcia then jumped back in to take first in the 100 backstroke, with Harris and Meyer finished third and fourth. In the 100 breaststroke, Briner lowered her career best time to finish first and Cattaneo and Siano finished second and third to complete she sweep.

In the final event of the night Manchester took first and second in the 400 freestyle relay. Lawrence, Anglin, Eberly, and Garcia took won followed by the team of Fox, DeLaughter, Dale, and Harris.

Wednesday night marked the final meet for Sveva Cattaneo who will be returning home to Italy tomorrow. As a new swimmer, Sveva showed tremendous improvement over the course of the season and was a valued member of the team. Good luck and save travels Sveva!
