Northfield Ella Gahl Wins Wrestling State Championship
Friday, Two Northfield Lady Wrestlers competed at the Indiana High School Girls Wrestling’s (IHSGW) State Wrestling Championships at Mooreville High School.
The IHSGW’s purpose is to promote girls wrestling in Indiana and provide a venue for colleges and universities looking for talented female athletes.
Freshman Ella France and Sophomore Ella Gahl qualified for the ISHGW State Tournament by competing at one of four Regional Championships at Jay County High School on Friday, January 6th. France placed 3rd out of 16 girls in the 113 lbs weight class. Gahl Placed 1st out of 13 girls in the 132 lbs weight class. Both advanced to the State Tournament.
Ella France lost her first match in the tournament eliminating her from placing. However, France had a fantastic accomplishment by being a Freshman State Qualifier. Outstanding Job, Ella!
Ella Gahl is Northfield’s First Individual Wrestling State Champion! As a Freshman, Gahl placed 5th at this tournament in 2022 in the 120 lbs weight class. Ella dominated, arguably, the tournament’s most challenging weight class, 132 lbs, pinning all four opponents with under 11 minutes of combined total mat time.
Lastly, Northfield tied for 15th place out of 30 Teams!

Wabash Girls wrestling has two State placers at the 2023 IHSGW State Finals.
Senior Olivia Harden set her goal for the year to place at state this year and worked extremely hard all season, on Friday night all that hard work paid off. Olivia won her first match of the day by first period fall making her a state placer. Olivia went on to place 8th in the state.
Junior Paloma Shull who was a 2022 IHSGW 8th place finisher, this year she worked even harder to improve that finish and with only one loss on the day placed 5th in the state making her a two time placer. Now she will come back for her senior year to improve on that finish.
As a team our Apache girl wrestlers placed 39th in the state, wrestling is not classed so that is 39th of 170+ schools in Indiana that have girls wrestling.
