The Manchester tennis team defeated Maconaquah 5-0 in their sectional opener Wednesday.

Manchester tennis opened sectional play at Peru versus Maconaquah and continued their strong play that earned them a conference title. All 5 wins ended in just under one hour of play as Sarah Kerlin (1 singles) and Myla Crozier (2 singles) each won 6-1,6-0 using wonderful serving and a combination of attacking groundstrokes with well placed shots with many points ending with a net put away. At 3 singles Bethany Penrod jumped out with the quickest first set winning 6-0, and then using consistency and point control with some big serves, she won set two 6-2. Delani Henderson and Carleigh Blevins took the 1 doubles match with several good streaks. After losing the opening game, the duo won 7 straight with powerful serves and aces plus heavy topspin returns for a 6-1, 1-0 lead. Maconaquah would bounce two games their way but Henderson and Blevins ripped more good shots and controlled the net to win the final 5 games for a 6-2. The final point came off the rackets of Addison Brubaker and Hailey Krom as the pair won 6-1,6-1 losing only the third game of set one and the first game of set two. Brubaker and Krom used their athleticism and great communication plus positive energy to dominate. Manchster takes their 15-1 record into round two of sectional play Thursday versus Southwood at 5:15. Peru faces Wabash in the other semifinal.
